The Department of Robotics recently held an online workshop with Pomona College on March 7. Led by Professor Yutaka HIROI and four students from the Life Support Robot System Lab, alongside Associate Professor Angelina Chin of Pomona College's Department of History, fifteen students engaged in a discussion on "nursing robots".

During the session, two research ideas were presented. The first was a "walking assist robot" designed for outdoor use, featuring active casters for smooth multidirectional movement and electrically assisted wheel mechanisms for navigating slopes. This system, aimed at assisting individuals requiring mobility aid and the elderly, includes easy installation and integrated camera/GPS functions for user monitoring.

The second concept introduced was an installation-based "communication robot app." aimed at dementia prevention through AI-mediated conversations. Utilizing charming animal illustrations, this application enables online calls and proposes customizable tablet parts to enhance user interaction.

Following the presentations, a lively exchange of opinions took place between students from both universities. Pomona College students posed queries, particularly regarding ergonomic design, which were carefully addressed. Reflecting on the discussion, students noted Pomona College's emphasis on privacy-related concerns, highlighting differing societal awareness between Japan and the United States.
